Fazzaletto Barbera Passito  2017   (Piemonte)     V  V                                                             10.00
The name and neckerchief print around the bottle represent the 'Fazzoletto Rosso' worn by Italian resistance fighters
during the Second World War II, symbolising freedom and rebellion.
This wine is a rediscovery of the old tradition of using partially-dried grapes to add richness and concentration. The Barbera
grapes were grown on southwest-facing slopes in the Monferrato hills of Piedmont. Following the traditional passito technique,
a portion of ripe Barbera grapes (around 20%), left on the vine for nearly a month after the main harvest to sun dry, were blended
with fresh Barbera grapes before fermentation. This sweetens, enriches and softens the resulting acidity.  A fleshy and juicy red
with aromas of mulled wine. The palate shows rich, concentrated favours of  blackcurrant and licorice  the ripe rounded finish is balanced by fresh bramble acidity.  Goes great with rich, hearty stews and a good match for roast poultry or game.
Fresh, lively and different.  We love it . We think you will too.

Ca Vittoria Appassimento Limited Edition 2019   (Puglia)                                            10.00
Gorgeous wine produced from a blend of predominantly Negroamara grapes with the addition lesser amounts of
Lambrusco and Merlot.  The appassimento style of wine requires some element of drying the grapes before fermentation.
In this case the grapes are allowed to "wither"  on the vine losing 50% of their weight in the process. The hand-picked
grapes are pressed and the fermentation starts. The skins are left on the must for a long period to extract flavours and the characteristic deep red colour. Subsequently the wine is left in oak for about 30 days  inducing notes of vanilla and spice.
Beautifully balanced for such a young wine. Concentrated flavours of sweet plums and raisins, with the short period on oak lending hints of chocolate and spice.
Great with roasted meats and with strong game, e
xcellent with mature and savoury hard cheeses and great to just slurp on its own.
Gold Medal Winner at the 2020 Concours International Des Vins.

Gran Maestro Rosso 2018  (Puglia)                                                                                                        10.50
Lovely, dryer style of red produced from partially dried Sangiovese and Primitivo grapes. The developing wine is subject to multiple
pumping over the lees to concentrate the flavour ..... a process known as Apassimento  (sounds much better in
Italian doesn't it).                      Rich, intense fruit flavours with delicate, sweet tannins.  Great with red meat and strong, mature cheese.

Brindisi Rosso 2018 (Puglia)                                                                                                               11.25

Characterful and concentrated, combining classical structure with fresh, vibrant sour cherry fruit.

with plum, wild cherry fruit, balsamic notes and firm but ripe tannins - leading on to a long, dry and savoury finish.

Baglio Gibellina Passimiento 2019  (Sicily)    V V                                                                  13.25
Passimiento is an ancient Sicilian technique which uses sun-dried grapes which are harvested in late autumn. Produced
from a blend of 75% Nero d'Avola and 35% Frappato grapes. The latter are picked immediately  after maturation and slow-fermented in stainless steel thus providing the wine with its freshness. The Nero d'Avola grapes are left to wither on the vine before soft pressing in wooden cases. When the "maestro" decides the time is right the two are blended together. The result is a rich, sumptuous, harmonious, perfectly balanced wine packed with concentrated  fruit and riddled with hidden nuances. You might be getting the impression that I like this wine. You are right. It is the nicest wine I have ever tasted in this price range.    VERY FEW LEFT

Only in the very best years does Angelo Rocca hand pick the ripest Negroamara and Malvasia Nera grapes from the
very best parts of his vineyard. The grapes are then lovingly  vinified and aged in Slovenian oak barrels, before being
allowed to mature for a minimum  of seven years. Only then, if Angelo is satisfied that his  wine meets the highest standards, will Angelo put his trademark  ”Rocca”   label on the bottle.

Legendary wine with great body, finesse and elegance. ..... the Sophia Loren of wine!!!
